The Local Housing Allowance (LHA) Direct website has been created to help you know what sort of property you are entitled to if you want to rent from a private landlord and claim housing benefit from your Local Authority.
To find out how much you may get from your local authority you first need to work out how many bedrooms you are entitled to. There is a calculator on the site which should give you an idea about how many bedrooms you are entitled to which you can find here (this will open a new window). Please note you are asked to confirm you have read the sites terms and conditions before you are allowed on the calculator page.
Once you know how many bedrooms you are entitled to you can look up the LHA rate for the borough you wish to live in by going here (again this will open a new window). These are estimates and may be affected by other factors.
There are also documents on the LHA Direct site that will give details on specific cirmcumstances that you may find useful. You can open a new window and read those documents here.
Finally there is advice from Direct Gov on privately renting a property. To open a new window and go to the Privately rented section of Direct Gov click here.
