Many properties in London are privately rented from letting agencies and private landlords. Some of these specialise in letting to people on low incomes and benefits. Details of these are available in local newspapers, on the Internet and in phone directories. You may be entitled to some assistance with the rent through housing benefit and able to obtain help with your rent deposit through schemes like Newham’s Rent Deposit Scheme. Hackney also has a rent deposit scheme, please contact 020 8356 5836. Ask for more details at your local benefits centre.
