The properties

The properties we advertise are unfurnished, this means that neither furniture nor kitchen appliances are provided. Kitchen facilities are also sometimes basic, and room sizes can be smaller than in much private sector housing. Properties are equipped with a bath and if a shower is also provided this will usually be indicated in the property adverts. Some properties are supplied with 'pram sheds' for additional storage space.

Most council properties were built over 30 years ago and whilst their internal details reflect the standards of those times, properties are continually being improved. Since 1980 most new social housing has been developed by Housing Associations. These recent developments are often at street level and sometimes incorporate off street parking, internal storage facilities and provision for kitchen and laundry appliances.

Councils and housing associations are working to ensure their housing stock meets a 'decent homes' standard set by the government. Many properties have already been refurbished, and many have door entry systems or concierge facilities. Social housing landlords are also obliged to maintain the properties in a good state of repair.
